Ralf Schmitt “free from sin” 2011, 39 cm x 40 cm, Plastic bag on stretcher frame

“Once, however, … Fruhtrunk came to class overcome with remorse and declared in front of everyone: ‘I have sinned.’ He then paid the incredible amount of 400 Deutschmarks into the kitty. When his students asked why, he admitted having accepted the commission to design the plastic bags for Aldi. At this moment, Fruhtrunk must have sensed how thin the line is between democratizing culture and its betrayal to the taste of the masses. Until today, every Aldi bag in the corporation’s northern German dominion is a Günter Fruhtrunk multiple.” (from: Florian Illies, “Aufstieg und Fall des Günter F.”, 2009)

This exhibition features the works of different creatives from Germany — including artists, designers, filmmakers, and sound designers — who re-evaluated the contemporary role of luxury and encapsulated their visions and agendas through their creations.

TakepART is a project based on co-working and relies on the collaboration between me as an artist and you as a collector/buyer/interested person in the production of art: www.startnext.de/takepart

What is the project about?
It is dedicated to new kind of artistic production.
As an artist, I would like to form an alliance with you and turn you into a co-producer. I make you the offer to concretely participate in my artistic production, our cooperation goes “hand in hand”. If you support this project, you can follow the creation of the artworks. You can also actively participate by joining in on the production and in the end call a work of art, to which you have personally contributed, your own.

What are the aims and who is the target group?
Everyone interested in becoming personally involved in the production of art and in co-producing a joint work. The aim is a direct collaboration that already starts in the production phase between me as an artist and you as a collector/buyer. Give me a photographic reproduction of your hand so that I can use it for the work and add a colour form to it. I will then give you the completed work as an original. You can either send me a digital photographic reproduction of your hand or come to my studio for me to take the picture. We additionally agree upon the colours and the title of the piece. TakepArt is a pilot project with which I seek to fathom the extent to which recipients can and would like to take part in the production beyond the role of a viewer.

Why should this project be supported?
Because together we would like to find out which participatory possibilities artistic production can offer the artist and the recipient/art lover. Seeing and buying is one thing, takepART is the other; concepts such as “shareconomy”, “cloud computing”, “crowdfunding” and “co-working” describe the change in society’s understanding of possessing and sharing. These present-day developments increasingly influence contemporary art, as well. Therefore, a platform such as Startnext appears ideal for putting the concept to practice and taking new paths in artistic production.
In addition to the joint works created in the frame of the project, you, as a supporter, will receive exclusive gifts including signed postcards of the produced pieces or signed photographic reproductions as prints or on aluminium Dibond. If the project is very successful and gains especially many supporters, I will finally document all works in a publication/catalogue in which all supporters are named. You will have the exclusive opportunity not only to follow and support an extraordinary experiment, but also to be a decisive part of it.

What will be done with the money in case of successful financing?
With 500.00 euros, you will become a co-producer and receive one of the two created artworks, I will keep the other. So we not only share the input but also the output. The production costs of the joint pieces and the gifts for the supporters are financed with this money. Moreover, in the event of an especially huge response, I am planning to produce a documentation/catalogue of the project. Measured by the market value of my artworks, you receive the work for half the price, meaning that we also share in this respect.

Who is behind the project?
As a fine artist, I am active as a producer and also as a mediator and teacher at the art academy and in educational projects at schools. As a painter with a conceptual, abstract approach, I always seek to deal with colour as a material and with its concrete conditions. My theme is painting as such, regarding both the method and the qualities of the materials. In 2012, I began creating a series of colour studies attributing the material of colour a further meaning. I would like to lend colour a corporeality or concreteness, give it a form and give rise to various impressions of consistencies. In doing so, I set the “colour bodies” in relation to figurative elements, for example, my hand, and pictorially create an interaction between figure and colour meant to induce a sensual/haptic experience and contact with the colour.
So far, I have used the reproduction of my hands for these pieces. It is now my intention to have people interested in art participate in the artistic production by including their hands in the picture and involving them in the production process beyond the role of a recipient. They contribute something personal to the realisation of the work and participate.

Please takepArt!

MyVisit.to presents works by 4 students of the Academy of Fine Arts in Nuremberg]]> FOCUS ACADEMY

During the summer term 2011 students of the post-graduate advanced course “Art and Public Space” by Prof. Simone Decker took part in my workshop about “New Artistic Formats” at the Academy of Fine Arts in Nuremberg. Every participant was asked to develop and realize a “visit” which was then advertised, published and documented on the Website www.MyVisit.to. In one-on-one talks and group discussions, the format, conception, goals for the visit, and the artistic realization of the project were discussed and carried out. Not only will we examine standard exhibition practice, but also question our own attitudes and paradigms.

4 positions were invited for the presentation at the booth. At the same time multiples will be delivered in Berlin and its urban hinterland in the context of the project postwurf.org reflecting on and testing the art market.

Michael Dietlinger’s (*1975) object Auraakkumulator (AAKKU) is a multi-use storage device for aura energy based on the universal effect system. It is therefore excellent for giving meaningless objects great value. The re-auratization of an object is handled in three phases: first it will be cleaned, then strengthened and in the end it is refined into art.

Stress, no time, work and moving frequently result in not knowing people in your own city, not even your neighbors. Barbara Engelhard (*1974) rings door bells at unknown flats and houses in her hometown Fuerth. If someone is at home and invites her in, with their permission, she will take a picture of them together in the setting of the citizen’s choosing documenting their new friendships with photos for her poster City Friends.

In her video the obiists Geraldine Frisch (*1968) accompanies Mrs. Doro Guht, I. B. Obladen and Mrs. Obrist who visit DIY stores in upper Bavaria more or less regularly. They examine the influence of the offered goods and the tips and tricks conveyed to the customers by advertising clips.

Postwurf.org is an experiment of the art market run by Chris Weiß (*1979) with an unpredictable outlet. It pays visits to deliver art and works by converging at one location, a private piece of property – preferably by throwing something over the fence, over the wall into the premises, into the garden or into the front garden. The modus operandi of aggressive product advertising are being adapted to promote young artists.

obladen doorings

The era of "obiism" started in mid 20th century. Numerous groups of so-called "obiists" have been observed regularly visiting DIY stores in Bavaria and all over Germany. There, they can indulge into their obiist DIY activities, follow their imagiation and use their newly aquired knowledge to improve their homes.]]>

“Obiism” is neither a disease nor a religion, it is mere passion – a passion to do handicrafts, to fiddle about, to design and construct on one’s own. The “obiists” belive in using their free time meaningfully, in finding creative solutions provided by the DIY stores and saving money at the same time.

hearings

I first coined the term “obiism”, based on a German chain of DIY stores, in 1990. After the German reunification, the former GDR citizens indulged in DIY activities. Not long after that, I was able to recognize this phenomenon when looking at the renovated houses in the former east German states. I was convinced that the era of “obiism” had finally begun.

The “obiists” form a social group with more or less skilled craftsmanship, a lively curiosity and an enthusiasm to enlarge and reconstruct their homes in their free time. They mainly live in and around the major German cities. Existing since the 1960s, DIY stores have since become a tradition. DIY stores like Bauhaus, Obi, Hornbach, Praktiker or hagebau, to mention only a few of them, enable DIY enthusiasts to practise their hobby.

Auraakkumulator (AAKKU)

The Auraakkumulator (AAKKU) is a multi-use storage device for aura energy based on the universal effect system.
It is therefore excellent for giving meaningless objects great value.

The re-auratization of an object is handled in three phases.

In the first phase it is cleaned.
In the second phase it is strengthened.
In the third phase it is refined into art.

The object is art now and radiates with new luster and significance.

Additional AAKKU units include:
AAKKU Recorder, AAKKU Player, AAKKU Strengthener, AAKKU Copier AAKKU Memory Storage, AAKKU Converter.

AAKKU_instruction_manual:
Determine the object, that you will auratize by thinking on it. The user turns on the Auraakkumulator by pressing the switch.

The Auraakkumulator is on.
Think on the object.
The smaller the distance between the object and the Auraakkumulator - the faster the object is refined into art.
When the object is completely art, operate the switch again.
The Auraakkumulator is off.

The object is art now and in it’s new luster and significance.

Caution:
When you have re-auratized 49 objects the Auraakkumulator will be empty.
To recharge your Auraaccumulator, visit the website
www.auraakkumulator.de and click AAKKU_charging.
Do not use an uncharged Auraakkumulator.
Use the product properly.

ARTIS PLENA SUNT OMNIA - Everything is full of art.

Postwurf.org works by converging at one location, a private piece of property – preferably by throwing something over the fence, over the wall into the premises, into the garden or into the front garden. ]]> postwurf.orgPostwurf.org began a series of “test throws” in Nuremberg following a successful pilot throw on January 20, 2011 in the Nibelungenviertel in Nuremberg. These occurred on June 16, 2011 between 16:30 and 17:00 hours in the prosperous Erlenstegen district.

The aim of the “test throws” was originally the delivery of a Postwurf shipment to the Diehl Industrial Family in the urban Erlenstegen district of Nuremberg. Since it was impossible until now to determine the exact address, there was spontaneous work at two properties in Mozart Street and Buelow Street. Two Michael Dietlinger linocuts on linoleum with gold dust from his Ich vermute Terroristen (I suspect terrorists) print were thrown.

The attending Barbara Engelhard, Michael Dietlinger, Ralf Schmitt and Christian Weiss were observed continuously by attentive residents in Buelow Street. The corresponding quotation: “Anyone appearing in such numbers arouses suspicion”. According to Michael Dietlinger the police were already there anyway.

In the meantime the occupant of the property on Mozart Street has already touched base with Post and asked for the personal collection of the work.

In addition to this the artist Ottmar Hoerl has made a few examples of his Landminen-Multiples available. Another attempt at delivery to the Diehl Family was conducted using these landmines.

Postwurf.org:

• pays a visit to deliver art
• is an art gallery without conventional premises
• approximately 15 artists are currently represented by Postwurf.org
• a delivery may take place accompanied by various protagonists
• people and their cultural empathy are called on

Postwurf.org is a Christian Weiss project and was to be experienced from June 20th until July 5th with forschungsgruppe_f in Bamberg under the work titled “Kunst zum Bürger bringen” (bring art to citizens). The work Ich vermute Terroristen was delivered in the course of a riot in the Bamberg correctional facility. Both of the 2011 cultural capitals of Europe, Turku and Tallinn are being visited in July within the expanded scope of the Urban-Audio.org project by Florian Tuercke. At the end of July 2011 Postwurf.org is active in the Völkinger Hütte world heritage site within the framework of the Fucking-Space.org symposium. Committed franchisees will throw in Texas in the Fall of 2011. In the entire region of southern Germany from August to December 2011, within the limits of city aid money.

Postwurf.org works by converging at one location, a private piece of property – preferably by throwing something over the fence, over the wall into the premises, into the garden or into the front garden. Even dropping in or rappelling and similar expedient techniques are considered.

The modus operandi of aggressive product advertising are being adapted to promote young art but primarily to promote young artists. We are barely able to protect ourselves against parasitic audio, video and printed matter of public areas in everyday life. But we are also only “safe” with reservations in a private room.

• Postwurf.org is an experiment of the art market with an unpredictable outlet
• Postwurf.org uses MyVisit.to as an investigative tool for its own alignment
• Postwurf.org will attend PREVIEW BERLIN 2012

The visit / the delivery is not necessarily noticed by the recipient immediately. For the most part the process is executed quickly but it is dependent on the specific requirements of the individual works.

The more complex and more logistically demanding goods to be delivered are a component of the discourse with the artists. Large bronze statues, for example, have to be delivered with the aid of a crane or a helicopter.

The addresses of those visited are handled with discretion because the visit quite clearly boils down to the intent to realize a profit.

The website www.postwurf.org (currently only available in German) serves for documentation of the project.

Vacher Strasse in Fürth

Globally we know everyone. In Berlin, Munich, Mainz, Stuttgart, also Krakau, Paris, Gomera, Mexico City, Mumbai, …

Stress, no time, work and moving frequently result in not knowing people in your own city, not even your neighbors.

To stop the anonymity, I commit myself to 3 months 0f living differently - of going out and meeting fellow citizens of my hometown Fuerth in Franconia, Germany. I´m going to ring door bells at unknown flats and houses, and get to know my fellow citizens of Fürth.
I am starting my quest out of curiosity and am excited to find out what´s going to happen.

If someone is at home and invites me in, with their permission, I´m going take a picture of us together in a setting of the citizen’s choosing – imagine me and my new acquaintances in living rooms, at kitchen tables or on balcony, documenting our new friendships with photos.

I want to invite other people, here and in other cities, to do the same: Let’s all get to know our fellow citizens, and let’s make friends.

Collected quotes and experiences during the friendship tour:

– are afraid of pets.
– what do I need from these other people?
– some neighbors are unknown.
– people move out, move in.
– no time to take care of the neigbourhood.
– leaving early to work and then coming home late.
– ring the bell at an apartment and come into a hairdresser’s through the back room - the bell is for the postman.
– no, I have no time for you, this is not for me.
– people are in the garden and harvesting cherries – invite me in - I get some cherries as a present.
– the name of the cherry tree is Werner-Hans, because Werner fell from the tree.
– the neighborhood is in order here.
– today people arrange meetings only through facebook.
– Fuerth does not draw new people, but holds to old ones!
– the garden is our second living romm.
Fürth is cheap.
– I lived in another city for 6 years. Now I’ve moved back an I never want to leave again.
– Fürth is adorable, cozy, and has its own character.
– Fürth has It’s own local patriotism.
– Fürth is a village and a city in one.
– someone sees me coming and thought, hopefully not a Jehovah‘s Witness!
– the neighborhood ist normal.
- I love Fürth!
– there are nice neighbors and others.

– there are conversations - I’m told stories of Fürth.
– cloverleaf city and city of monuments.
– city of the Quelle mailorder company.
– here is my girlfriend and my job - there is little contact with the neighbors
– Fürth is simply super.
– I’m sent away - no time.
– know the neighbors very little. perhaps 1, 2 people.
– chocolates are given to me, and I get an explanation of where the true cradle of Germany is.
– I’m sent on to the neighbours, and the bell is rung for me.
– FÜ = “Fahrer übt” (German pun - “driver practicing”).
– I am fan of Fürth.
– Fürth is nice.
– the city has too few stores and things to offer.
I ring at the door and hear footsteps – am being watched through the peephole, but no one opens. I continue on my way.
– we already know the neighbors - everyone helps each other occasionally.
– Fuerth has potential.
– Fürth is culture.
– Fürth is my home.

Squatting Plaça de Catalunya

MyVisit.to invites you to one of Hanno Millesi’s performative readings in public space. It is part of the new programme SwabOFF, which will take place in different areas of the city of Barcelona before, during and after the art fair. The aim is to give more visibility to new artistic initiatives and upcoming contemporary art and and to bring it closed to the citizens of Barcelona.

Hanno Millesi
is a Vienna based writer of fiction, who combines several artistic methodes, strategies and categories of art in his work. In public appearances he sometimes uses fragments of the text he is going to read, using them in the tradition of action-lectures of the 60s or interdisciplinary working artists as Marcel Broodthaers. Please follow this link as a reference.

His text “Methode Mensch” (Method Human Being), which does exist in a Spanish translation, quotes war orientated slogans taken from secret messages, written by members of the Rote Armee Fraktion (RAF). The terrorists exchanged these messages being in prison to convince themselves and one another of their definite will to keep up with what they considered as their unbroken will to believe in their ideals and to fight. Millesi puts their words in his own context, in which somebody wants to start his own small business and therefore takes these expressions of resolution as social advice.

Liebe Helga, lieber Hartmut,
liebe Familie Rausch,

Man will mich abwimmeln.
Zum Schriftverkehr also? Aha.

Es geht also doch!

Diesmal will ich mich geschickter anstellen.
Was?
Äh … liest Dein Vater viel in Büchern?

Schreibt Dein Vater vielleicht sogar selbst Bücher?
… ja. Na, also.
Du bist ein braves Kind. Dein Vater ist also Schriftsteller, ja?
J… ja.
Das ist gut. Würdest Du mich jetzt mit Deinem Vater verbinden?
Verbinden?
Gib’ ihm einfach den Hörer, einverstanden?
… ja.

Zeigen. An Audio Tour through Berlin by Karin Sander
December 5, 2009 – January 10, 2010
Opening of the exhibition on December 4, 2009, at 9 pm

In the extensive exhibition Zeigen. An Audio Tour through Berlin, conceptual artist Karin Sander brings together works by 566 Berlin-based artists at Temporäre Kunsthalle Berlin, offering an unusual insight into current artistic production in the city.

The project surprises the visitor with a seemingly empty exhibition space. On the Kunsthalle’s white walls - where one would usually find works and descriptive labels - the names of the invited artists are all there is to see. The works themselves remain invisible - at first glance. For Zeigen. An Audio Tour through Berlin, Sander invited fellow artists to translate their own work into an acoustic piece. The very different realizations - performed, sung, spoken, recited - can be accessed individually via an audio guide. Listening on headphones, visitors are offered a new level of perception which leads from the familiar visual approach to artworks towards an auditory, imaginative experience, offering scope for different mental visualizations.

From December 5 open daily from 11 am to 6 pm, Thursdays to 9 pm. Free admission to the exhibition! Public Tours are available on Sundays at 3 pm. The tours are for free and do not require a reservation. Individual tours are available on request at any time. Contact: education@kunsthalle-berlin.com, Tel. +49 (0)30 2576204-13

The exhibition will be accompanied by a publication published by Verlag der Buchhandlung Walther König and a limited edition by Karin Sander.

Ralf Schmitt “Attempt at an Educational Film” (02:10)

There are different languages and intentions regarding the way in which art is addressed and who speaks about art in public space. What do sociologists say, what do passers-by wish for, what do art scholars formulate, what do philosophers think… and what do artists say and, above all, do?

In 2001, Manuela Ammer, Heike Eipeldauer and Heimo Zobernig published the draft of a “brief encyclopedia on art & the city/art and architecture/art and history/art and society/art and exhibition/art and the public” in the reader “Public Art” edited by Florian Matzner.

At issue is therefore the field of tension between collisions and coalitions. Does art have to be “meaningful” as is stated in the film? What are our evaluation criteria? It is about getting to know, probing and exchanging different concepts, methods, contents, experiences, and motivations, it is about criticism and self-criticism.

Without persuading
Without stylizing
Without lecturing

And if need be, also with the friendly support of Tati, Loriot and the “Carnival of the Animals”. So much to the sound and vision.

Comeback at Preview Berlin © 2009 Frederik Foert

MyVisit presents two works specifically produced for this year’s edition and new concept of Preview Berlin: a spatial installation by Frederik Foert and an art intervention by the group ULTRA ART FAIR UNLIMITED.

“The sky was the limit, but heaven is a place on earth.”
By abidance of the anew aircraft grounding at Tempelhof, location of this years Preview - The Emerging Artfair, installaton artist Frederik Foert will show his collection of failed aviation test. Since years „Retro Pioneer“ Foert is trying to loose ground by building kinetic constructions. Confronting the perfi dies of day to day life he constantly rearranges his houshold and generates small cineastic moments by constructing kinetic objects.

Inspired by Film classics, Foert transforms the moving pictures back into a three-dimensional set. His materials come from his immediate living environment. Every-day objects like household-appliances and tools are requisites and protagonists at the same time, exploiting their own drivemechanism or transfering their power onto other objects. The scripts of these three-dimensional fi lm loops, can be further developed in the viewer ’s imagination. To the moon on a washing maschine, into orbit by record player!

From the hammer drill to the stereo record player up to the food processor, no technical equipment is too complex or banal, in order to be able to be transformed by a layman hand into a new purpose. Foerts narrative motion studies draw the attention of the viewer to the apparently absent persons behind the technical equipments and always walk on the tight rope between humour and tragedy. There for he uses the central luggage conveyor belt at the former airport as a stage, which is platform and motor in one.

“Another Fairy Tale Vol. 9”
The artists’ group ULTRA ART FAIR UNLIMITED was founded in 2006 by Heinz Sandoza, gāo bízi & Lars from Trier and uses rumors, the oldest mass medium of the world. They designed six messages, which are going to be spread by printed Post-it® notes in the main hall, in the fair shuttle and in the city during the fair dates. At the same time the rumors will be published online in the rumor mill of MyVisit.

ULTRA ART FAIR functions like a Trojan horse into the emerging and proliferating global art fair markets of today. Its web design quotes and comments on the fair format and mimics already existing corporate designs and strategies of art fairs. Having started in the form of a rumor, ULTRA ART FAIR infiltrates and increasingly materializes on special occasions. The climax of its locations (Miami 2006 - Dubai 2007 - Basel 2007 - Shanghai 2008 - Lagos 2010) uses, induces and questions cultural misunderstandings and existing stereotypes of internationality and market domination. Currently the complete screening of the Webpage http://www.ultra-art-fair.com takes about 55 minutes. The next spin-off will definitely be held at ULTRA Lagos in 2010.

Professional Preview: 2 p.m. – 6 p.m. (by invitation only)
Opening hours: Daily 1 p.m. – 8 p.m.

The soap-opera “Bubble Solution” by ULTRA ART FAIR UNLIMITED demonstrates how to produce and burst huge art bubbles. The group was founded in 2006 by Heinz Sandoza, gao bízi & Lars from Trier. ULTRA ART FAIR functions like a Trojan horse into the emerging and proliferating global art fair markets of today. Its webdesign mimics and quotes already existing corporate designs of art fairs. The next spin-off will definitely be held at ULTRA Lagos in 2010. Currently the complete screening of the webpage (www.ultra-art-fair.com) takes about 55 minutes and is part of the NITSCH exhibition.

Überschneidende Aspekte in den Werken sollen neue Zusammmenhänge offenbaren, Abgrenzungen aufdecken: u.a.

Christian Hanussek revisits Salifou Lindou in Douala to continue their current teamwork “avant c’était avant” and to exhibit already realized projects in the exhibition “émotions partagées”.

“Compteur oracle”
(“meter oracle”) is the title of a 3 min video-loop featuring an electricity meter lit by candles during a power cut, a PR-text by multinational AES who is in charge of Cameroon’s power supply and a chat between Lindou’s wife Aicha with her cousin on family matters. The electricity meter serves as interface between the grid and the consumer juxtaposing the ambitious claims of AES with the village-like atmosphere (candlelight chatting) the city is cast in during the frequent power cuts.

“masques voitures”
(“masked cars”) is a series of several photos and videos extended by ongoing performances of cars circulating the city. Cars are strong bearers of images, and can be understood in Africa as representing the “West” in a way comparable to how wooden masks represent African cultures in the “West”. Cars are highly charged with symbolic meaning, embodying a certain lifestyle and models of identity; they are in fact masquerades. In “masques voitures” they get associated with images of the places they pass, which were reflected in their shiny surfaces. These images got inscribed in the cars, as if incorporated in their memory. The combination and juxtaposition of potholes with slogans for cell phone providers sets the trancelike levitating life promoted in cell phone company adds on gigantic billboards against the literal abysses encountered on the ground.

Will the artist Carsten Höller return to his roots as a phytopathologist in 2009?

Shakeout is a term used in business and economics to describe the consolidation of an industry or sector, in which businesses are eliminated or acquired through competition. It may also refer to a situation in which many investors exit their positions, often at a loss, due to uncertainty in the market or recent bad news circulating around a particular security or industry.

Shakeouts can often occur after an industry has experienced a period of rapid growth in demand followed by overexpansion by manufacturers. Large, diversified companies are often most able to endure a weak business climate and can benefit from shakeouts. A shakeout of investors and internet businesses occurred during the dot-com bubble.

During the yearly meeting of the International Artists Forum (IKG) (October 16 – 19, 2008) Norbert Radermacher moved a mountain to the east bank of the Oder at the House of Culture, Słubice.

Oderberg

Warm periods and ice ages
Floods and droughts
Mountains fold out of the ground
The innermost petrifies on the surface
Seas turn to desert
Continents drift

Who knows the origin of the granite boulders on the fields

Who sees the mountain in the Oder

© Tobias Rehn “IO, Rauschen, Mono, 14 dB”, 2008

Due to the many connotations associated with the term, Tobias Rehn’s final project on the issue of “noise” deals primarily with the central question of whether language or even writing, the written word can make noise.

Noise is superficially considered to be something chaotic, a disorderly acoustic phenomenon that emerges due to the superimposition of several sounds and phonemes. Important here is that it is not possible to hear discreet, separable phonemes, and that it cannot have a meaning. But how could writing, with all the meaning transported within it, make noise? According to Friedrich Kittler, this is not possible, for writing stores phonemes and thus excludes the possibility of sound, and thus all noise.

To answer this question, in this work I will present references to romantic literature, where a first boom in the use of the motif of noise in texts can be found. By way of comparison to various forms of storing music – in note form, in discrete signs – comparable to the storage of language in text – and the analog storage of music on a record, as well as borrowings from the theory of acoustics and signals (white noise and the signal-to-noise ratio), a system is derived that makes it possible for writing to make noise.

Through the work on this system and comments on this, what grew in Tobias Rehn’s work is the consideration that expectation and intention play an important role in considering the phenomenon of noise. As an example, he presents an interview with John Cage, in which he (among other things) comments on the expectations that he has for “sounds” and explains why he is fascinated by the sound of traffic. During the interview, he never once uses the word “noise,” showing that with the right attitude it is possible that a meaning can result from what is conventionally understood as noise, in this case, listening pleasure.

From these considerations, Tobias Rehn derives a second question, whether it is possible to perceive noise as content. An attempt to achieve this is shown by the work Intros – Outros. This consists of a record where the grooves where normally the musical information can be found now contain the background noise from 15 records. In this way, the basic sound of the grooves themselves has become signal or content, for the decision was made to place this noise consciously where otherwise no noise is expected, between the lead-in and lead-out grooves of a record.

But whether the content on this record is actually seen as noise in turn depends on the expectation of the listener. This shows how every attempt at undertaking a more precise examination of noise is ultimately doomed to failure. On the one hand one is bound to specific intentions, on the other hand what we assume to be noise loses in the moment we think we have grasped it its shape of the chaotic and disorderly, and thus no longer seems to be really noise.

When Sunrise Avenue becomes Magnificent Mile: “Another Fairytale Gone Bad”

This is the end, you know,
Artist, the plans we had went all wrong,
We ain’t nothing but fight and shout and tears

We got to a point, I can’t stand
I’ve had it to the limit; I can’t be your Larry Go-Go
I ain’t more than a minute away from going bust

Chorus:
Out of my life, Out of your mind,
Out of the tears, we can’t deny,
We need to swallow all our pride,
And leave this fair behind,
Out of my booth, Out of you goof,
Out of the dreams we had, they’re bad,
Tell them it’s cash, which made us mad,
Tell them another fairytale gone bad!

Another gig and I bleed,
They all make mistakes and so did we,
But we did something we can never turn back Wright.

Find a new one to fool,
Leave and don’t look back. I won’t follow,
We have nothing left at the end of Sam Keller’s Day.

We can’t cry the pain away,
We can’t find a need to stay,
There’re no more rabbits in my hat, to make things right.

Chorus (2x)
Out of my life, Out of your mind,
Out of the tears we can’t deny,
We need to swallow all our pride,
And leave this fair behind,
Out of my booth, Out of you goof,
Out of the dreams we had, they’re bad,
Tell them it’s cash which made us mad,
Tell them it’s trash which made us fat,
Tell them another fairytale gone bad,
Tell them who is NEXT, please.
